Day 10: Fatima

 Today we spent the day in Fatima, my seocnd time here!

It was within this shrine that Our Lady appeared to three children:  Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco in 1917.  During her vistis, Mary revealed three secrets to the children in order that they could share them with the world and convert hearts back to Jesus.

In 1928, construction began on the basilica and was finished in 1954. 

The way of the cross is on the fields where the children were working when the angel appeared to them...that all happened in 1916, the year before Our Lady came

The children are buried in the main church - so beautiful

We had Mass on the apparition site.  

I love it here!

Today began our pilgrimage to Medjugorje, Rome and Loretto! 46 of us, invited in various ways by Our Lady herself, moved from Indianapolis to Philadelphia, then to Rome, Dubrovnik, and finally to Medjugorje. Some pilgrims come from my current parishes, others from my former parish, some from the parish where my good friend Fr. Jack used to be (Fr. Each person was called here by Our Lady for a purpose. Providence arranged the day perfectly. We left on the vigil of the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and then arrived on the day itself—what better day to begin a Marian pilgrimage? Day 5: Mariology 101, Cenacolo, Blue Crosses, and More

Day five started early and quietly. I woke up early and prayed the Office nearby Fr. Slavko's grave. The morning air was cool, the birds just beginning their song. I keep thinking of all the prayers that have been whispered here by pilgrims and priests over the years. It was beautiful to pray the psalms with Fr. Slavko. After breakfast, we went to Mass at St. James Church , and, as always, it was overflowing—people standing in the aisles, filling every corner, a sea of pilgrims gathered around the altar of peace. The priest’s homily was remarkable, a true jewel of Mariology built around four words that sum up Mary’s entire life: Fiat , Magnificat , Conservabat , and Stabat . Day 2: Apparition Hill and Amazing Graces!

Day two in Medjugorje began beneath a sky washed in pale gold, the village stirring quietly to prayer. Morning light fell on the stones and vineyards, on pilgrims already walking toward St. James Church. There’s a peace here that needs no words—every breath feels like a prayer. Before writing father, I want to preface everything with this. From a faithful Catholic perspective , it’s important to understand that the apparitions at Medjugorje are still considered “alleged” —that is, not yet officially verified by the Church. This is perfectly normal and in no way a condemnation. The Church always moves carefully in these matters, waiting for time, fruit, and discernment to confirm what is truly from God. In fact, the same was true of Fatima , Lourdes , and other approved apparitions—the Church did not give formal recognition until years, even decades after they occurred.
